What is Transformative Coaching?
Why some conversations create change while others don’t
When I was 17, I was dealing with stress and I was recommended to go and see a psychologist. However, after a year of bi-weekly sessions, it didn’t help me. Instead, I decided to try a path and decided to see a different kind of therapist.
Technically, she wasn’t a therapist.
She had a holistic and spiritual approach to therapy using acupuncture, journaling, meditation as the main tools. However, mostly it was our conversations that made an impact on me.
It was the conversations that helped me change my perspective and deepen my reflective skills.
Her questions would help me get unstuck and move forward.
Soon, I could suddenly see how I was using the same methods of inquiry in various parts of my life:
As a yoga teacher, I use self-inquiry to reflect upon my physical and spiritual practice.
As a designer, I use methods of inquiry to research and get creative in all design projects. I even created a “design-driven coaching” approach as I worked on the topic of Life Design in my final research project at university.
“Coaching” had in many ways been a part of my life for years, and I wanted to help others get unstuck as well and achieve the same skillsets as myself.
Therefore, I decided to take a certification in Transformative Coaching in 2023.
To explain what coaching is, it is easier to explain, what it is not
To explain what coaching is, it is easier to explain, what it is not: coaching is not therapy and it is not advisory. Coaching is an equal conversation between two people, where the coach guides the coachee to deeper reflection and self-discovery through questions and conversation. The coach can help the coachee take action and stay accountable to move forward with their goals.
Transformative Coaching is a coaching method created by MindJuice University (you can read more about their education here). Their method involves moving through five stages of awareness to create transformation. Their method combines Cognitive Coaching, Personal Leadership, Enneagram, Systemic theory and Communication, and foundational shadow work based on the work by Carl Jung.
Transformative coaching is a holistic approach to coaching where the coach helps the coachee to move through the five stages of awareness to create change.
In theory, there isn’t a topic which is not suitable for transformative coaching. Perhaps, you want to speak about your relationships, work, family, or health. However, even though we are aware that we all carry trauma, we do not dive deep into childhood or past experiences.
Instead, we focus on where you are today and where you want to be – and which fear is holding you back from getting there.
We ask questions such as:
What are your dreams?
What would it give you to achieve this dream?
Why have you not taken action on your dream?
How could you overcome this obstacle and move forward?
A transformative coaching session consists of guidance and questions to help you self-reflect and discover your deepest fear, and together with the coach, take action to overcome the fear and move closer to your dream.
Is coaching for you?
Let me ask you the following questions:
Do you feel stuck and want to design a new path for yourself?
Do you feel like you are holding yourself back from achieving and dream and you want to strengthen your relationship with yourself?
Are you struggling to create a new habit and you want to find inner confidence and accountability?
Do you have dreams but lack the confidence or the plan to pursue them?
Do you feel stressed and want to become more mindful in your daily life?
If you are nodding to any of these questions, then transformative coaching is for you.
Do you want to know more? Then please send me an email or book a call with me, and we can talk about how coaching could help you move forward in your life.
